What’s the Real Scoop on Soy? (Part 2)

In case you haven't read the report just yet, you'd be interested to know that Dr. John Erdman, a professor at the University of Illinois who wrote the AHA advisory, explained that substituting soy, which has very low saturated fat and no cholesterol, would be a healthy thing to do. Did you read that in all those media reports or hear it on TV? I didn't think so.

Dr. Erdman comments further that soy protein, like animal protein, is complete - it contains all the essential amino acids in sufficient quantities to support human life. "I'm not suggesting that people become vegetarians, just that they consider using soy milks, soy nuts, tofu or some of the new products on the market that you can make milk shakes out of for example, as an alternative protein source," he said.

We're not compelling people to become vegetarians either. But, Café Soy offers a mighty fine product and its unique soy-based formula satisfies nutritional needs as well as the needs of those who prefer a gourmet taste.

Eat well and be well.

Soy and your diet

By now, you should have read the real scoop about the AHA report on soy and heart disease. Assuming you did, the panel which issued the report also declared that soy-based foods are a benefit to your diet because of their high content of polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals and low saturated fat content. Of course, this agrees with what dieticians have said all along—that is, soy may be beneficial when eaten in place of less nutritious foods such as hamburgers or hot dogs which do not promote your health but may well do the opposite.

Eat well and be well.

Healthy diet 'confusion' and why

You're not the only one confused about what's good to eat and what's not. The medical science investigators are confused themselves and misery loves company. It may interest you to know researchers may be relying less on science than on food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) which are cheaper than meaningful research methods and considered "practical" for collection of data in large edimeliologic studies. In short, FFQs record what respondents report about their dietary intake given a specific list of foods in a specific period of time. From that (yes, it's true), 'scientists' make pronouncements about what's cancer-causing and what's cancer-fighting, what's 'good' to eat today and bad to eat tomorrow. If you think you're confused, well you might be getting help to feel confused.

I won't tell you soy is a cure all or a cure anything, but soy and its consumption has been around for 3,000 years now and in Asia it has been consumed on a daily basis in abundance for eons. Check back soon for comparative information about chronic illness in the soy-eating East vs. the non-soy consuming West. You already know chronic illness is epidemic here in the West. Why not in the East where they smoke even more cigarettes than we do? Stay tuned to find out.

All the best to you!
